EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
