WHO Sounds Concern Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Medications

Fewer than a tenth of people who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial guidance on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, more than two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to broad availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Despite the present most favorable outlook, the supply of these medications might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, per the WHO.

The guideline urges governments and firms to widen access, via approaches such as patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to slow digestion, curb appetite and enhance satiety so users eat less.

Patients typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Studies indicates users may see weight return within a year of stopping the drug, as their normal food cravings return.

To be carrying excess weight elevates your risk for experiencing health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some cancers.

Obesity affects people in every country and was associated with millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
